i'm still on
cali time, so was a bit slow moving this morning, and decided to be lazy and take a taxi. and boy am i glad i did! i had a refreshingly delightful cab ride with my friendly driver, abdoul.
during our trip from the UWS down to chelsea, i got to chat with this quirky guy about everything thing from the repetitive cab tv programming to gelato in chelsea market (his passenger 1+ years ago stopped to take photos of, and he's been craving ever since). he also asked me about my job, and talked about the importance of loving what you do. he shared his passion for driving --- but only in nyc, because here, cabs are necessities to life. he told me about his month long trips to africa to see his family, and how he restarts as a "new driver" each time he returns ... i can imagine
that would be very frustrating, but he said it with a smile, and seemed to truly appreciate the flexibility and constant need for cabbies in nyc.
my favorite part of our conversation was when i mentioned i work for google. his response was priceless: "google? really?! how does google work? when i type, are you the one who answers?" it was pretty precious. after i clarified that i am, in fact, not the brains behind google, he went on to just be in awe of technology and all of the people who type away like "robots."
needless to say, day 1 in nyc started with all smiles. hooray for adorable taxi cab drivers! next week, though, i vow to start commuting new yorker style on the subway...
